TECHNICAL ADVICE & EXPERTISE
ON AUTOMOTIVE PROJECTS

ROAD AND RACE APPLICATIONS

As automotive application engineers, we provide technical advice and expertise on automotive projects and products to our customers, to develop and adapt automotive projects in response to our customer needs.

The team’s primary roles are the customer interface, requirements capture, definition, system development, test, and subsequent calibration.

This level of integration within the customer environment ensures that our powertrain engineering projects deliver smooth, efficient, and safe vehicles.

With the ever-increasing levels of complexity in today’s motorsport vehicles and onboard and remote powertrain control systems and complex software applications, Zytek’s skilled and experienced systems/applications engineering group plays an essential role in any successful product engineering and application project.

Motorsport Powertrain Architectures

With a background in all major motorsport powertrain architectures (pure ICE, hybrid, pure electric), with up-to-date knowledge of all FIA homologation requirements and standards, the Zytek team is well placed to work across the entire powertrain spectrum.

Primary Role

The team’s primary roles are the customer interface, requirements capture, definition, system development, test, and subsequent calibration. The role requires extensive customer liaison, usually at the customer’s facility and at test tracks throughout Europe and potentially worldwide. This level of integration within the customer environment ensures that our powertrain engineering projects deliver the highest quality, giving our customers the chance to perform at their best and win races.

Single-Make Spec Series

Whilst usually engaged in the development of systems for competitive race series, the Zytek team can also perform application engineering on single-make, spec series, where the same equipment is offered to all competitors. The series requires that the systems not only offer best-in-class performance but also offer both high levels of consistency and value for money.

Over the years the application team has expanded significantly, in parallel to the expanding demands from both customers and series organisers.

Whilst the team has been able to offer ISO26262 functional safety compliant development services for a number of years, more recently, a dedicated cybersecurity department has been created to ensure that any products be immune from any external threats or ensure data security when considering live telemetry feeds.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Applications Engineering (AE) is an umbrella term used to describe all aspects of software development including planning, design, coding, testing, debugging, deployment, maintenance, support, etc. It is often confused with Software Development but they are different. AE is more focused on the technical side of things while SD focuses more on business requirements and user experience.

Application engineering starts from the first enquiry from a customer, turning this into a set of technical specifications for the engineering development teams (hardware, software, electric machine) to develop a product or feature.

All systems-level simulation is performed by this team, to ensure that when combined, products operate as an optimum power system.

All testing, once passed off by the product teams, takes place in the applications department, to a point where a product can be signed off against the original project objectives.

A range of facilities are provided in-house at Zytek, from sub-component tests to full-size dynamometers.

Yes, this is always preferred on customers’ projects to ensure performance is as expected by customers and to undertake any calibration necessary to be completed in-car.

This role requires extensive customer liaison and a deep understanding of their requirements, usually at the OEM facility and test locations throughout the world.

Our dedicated ISO26262 functional safety department has been created to document the process and systems required to comply with the latest automotive standards. Over the years the team has expanded significantly, in parallel to the expanding legislation framework.

Our applications clients have included Smart, Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, for more see Our History.
